Using EF-S lens on full frame Canon bodies

"What camera do you use?" is a question I get often enough to film a response! Here you go! :) A couple notes for before, after and during: When I say "depth of field" I'm referring to the distance between figures in the foreground and the background -- in particular, how they appear in or out of focus. For example: a shallow depth of field might show the figure in the foreground in focus while the background was blurred. It gives a cinematic look to the video and makes it look very professional. Some of the newer digital SLR cameras (the ones that also film video) can achieve this. I had purchased one for that purpose about a year ago but ended up returning it and here's why: While these newer cameras CAN film video, they aren't video cameras. They will shut off after a short period of filming and I film for far too long -- the camera I used shut down after anywhere from 4 to 10 minutes and without warning. It was problematic at best and not a good option for me. Many people find these cameras work well for their purpose -- it's a matter of personal preference and considering how you're filming. I shot this on my iPhone 4 using Photojojo's macro lens attachment. The wasp was in the process of eating the caterpillar when I found it. The caterpillar was eating my chili plant so I was quite happy to see it gone. After shooting this video the wasp abandoned its feed and the flies finished off the caterpillar.

I took the plung and decided to remove the front element of my Canon EF-S 17-55mm f/2.8 IS USM lens. Please read the entire description before attempting this process! Dust, hairs and pollen can easily get "sucked" into the lens as the camera initialises and the barrel extends. They manifest themselves as out of focus dark areas on the image and they do not change size or position as you zoom the camera lens. In most instances any "sensor" specks of dirt actually occur from the dust settling on infra red filter which is before the CCD itself. To clean the IR filter and the CCD the camera back and inside plates have to be removed before you can gain access. This video shows you how to perform this operation, clean the IR and CCD and then re-assemble the camera. Using a dust blower will generally remove the dust specs, however if the camera has been used in dust enviroments or in high air pollution such as cities then there is also a possibility of a "film" of contamination also on the surface of the IR filter. Using my technique of the cotton bud removes the film thus restoring any lack of contrast due to this film. If you IR filter comes out of the holder on re-installation put the IR filter into the small recess in the lens housing, then the small rubber boot with the widest part uppermost on the IR filter and then gently place the CCD block back on top of the boot and proceed to tighten it down as per video. I make the statement that although this is a simple task, you undertake this at your own risk and I can accept no responsibility if you "brick" your camera by ...

www.learningdslrvideo.com I picked up a Digital Calibration Target last week and I have been playing around with it and learning a lot more about my histogram on the back of the camera. I found it helpful in my photography to get the perfect white balance and exposure but for video I am struggling on how best to use it. Using it for photography I shift the exposure to the right of the histogram where I bring my highlights almost to clipping, but with videos I am finding that is not the best approach so I am practicing withe waveform monitor.

Not this passenger, who set up his Canon 5D Mark II digital SLR camera on a tripod and attached a timelapse controller. When he pointed his 16mm-to-35mm lens out his airplane window, the result was this remarkable timelapse video of his 11-hour flight. Taking that Great Circle route above the polar regions, the video flies us through the aurora borealis, giving us a look at those spectacular northern lights. Also remarkable is the fact that the Air France flight crew allowed the use of that bundle of electronic devices throughout the entire flight. At the end of this video, you'll see the rig with which he snapped the 2459 shots -- one approximately every two miles. The Canon EF 28mm f is a prime lens, which means there's no zoom, but it offers great image quality and a pretty fast (wide) aperture for a bargain price. Offering about the equivalent of a 45mm lens on a crop sensor dSLR like my 350d / Rebel XT, it's great for landscapes or portraits where you need that extra angle of view. Watch out for some barrel distortion at the edges, but overall I love this lens, and it's the one that I always leave on my camera. Cheers, Rob

Shot mostly at f2.8 - except the opening street shot; iso 100-1250, on a 5D2. The orchestra shots are handheld (OS on) and the rest on a tripod (OS off). I kept the original audio so you can hear camera operation sounds and the optical stabilizer buzzing (actually pretty quiet). Also I have inserted the flower shots so you can see the shape of the bohek. I think the lens works very well for video because of the large aperture, the zoom range and the extremely usefull OS. The downside is that the lens is a bit heavy and the focus ring is kind of stiff, but I got used to it pretty fast.

www.learningdslrvideo.com In this test I am going to be switching from A to B, and your job at the end of the video is to decide if you can tell which one A or B was sharpened in camera or done in post processing. For this test I will be using the 720p resolution, I will explain why later. Each comparison will use the same settings except one of them will have the sharpness in camera turned to 3 or the sharpness turned down to 0 and sharpening added in post to match. For all these tests I shot this in the neutral picture style with the contrast at 1, I have not added any post processing except for sharpening for the appropriate clips. I watch all the top people in the industry from Philip Bloom to Vincent LaForet and most seem to say that in camera processing is the devil or evil or something like that and they advise to turn it all the way down. Since I like to test everything I can, I wanted to put this to the test as well. From what I gather from these top people is that the small chip inside the camera that applies the sharpening is not as good as what your computer can do in post. Now the reason I am shooting at 720p is because of aliasing or moire patterns. Since the camera sensor can shoot at a much higher resolution for stills than for movies it has to throw out horizontal lines for 1080p and even more for 720p. So from my previous tests I have noticed that 720p will show aliasing more than 1080 so that is why I choose to shoot in 720p in this test to show the ...
